How to teach a dog to give a paw?

When a puppy appears in the house, we immediately have a desire to teach him basic commands that will make him more obedient. To the basic complex of commands, which should be taught the puppy in the first place, the "give a paw" command also applies.

Teaching a puppy to give a paw, like most basic commands, is simple enough. The main thing at the same time is to stick to the simplest rules that will simplify the training procedure:

The command "give a paw" - how to teach?

There are several ways to train a dog. And in each of them the owner should praise his puppy, and not only with the help of words, but also treating him with some kind of delicacy . Already after the dog gives the paw independently, you need to gradually reduce the amount of given delicacy to a minimum, and then completely stop feeding, leaving only oral praise. But it is very important to remember that when teaching you need to be very careful and, in no case, scare the dog and hurt her.

Here's how you can teach a dog to give a paw:

  1. The owner clamps his fist in a fist and shows it to the dog. Having smelled something delicious, the dog will try to get it with a snout. Of course, he does not succeed. Then he uses his paw. And at this moment the owner should say "give a paw" and take a dog's paw in his hand. After you release the paw, you can give the kid a treat.
  2. The owner independently takes a dog's paw with the words "give a paw" and raises it to the level of the shoulder. After that, he lowers his paw, praises the dog and treats it with a delicacy.
  3. At the command "give a paw," the owner with his left hand raises his paw, and puts it into his right hand. You need to do this as if the puppy himself put a paw in your hand. This exercise is recommended to be performed after the dog got acquainted with the two previous ones and has a little idea of what is required of it.

You have to have patience, and your puppy will definitely master this team. And the dog needs to teach the "give a paw" command not only to surprise your friends, but also from a practical point of view. After all, when a dog knows how to give a paw, it becomes much easier to shave its claws, wash dirt or pull out thorns.
