The Basel Art Museum was created thanks to a unique collection of art paintings, engravings, drawings, artifacts and other works of art collected by Basilius Amerbach. After the death of the collector in 1661, local authorities bought an invaluable collection. This fact became decisive when organizing an open museum in the city of Basel . The museum's funds were constantly replenished, and the old building could no longer accommodate the increased collection. Therefore, in 1936, the treasures of the city moved to a new building, and the museum changed its policy and began to collect its own collection of international art of our time. So, 1959 was marked by the first exhibition of works of American expressionists. This event served as an occasion for the opening of the Museum of Modern Art.
