Museum of Cartoon and Animation


The museum of caricature and cartoon in Basel is unique for Switzerland . It is completely devoted to the art of satire. In his collection there are more than 3000 thousands of different paintings. History and structure of the museum

The museum was founded by Dieter Burckhardt. He decided to make his personal collection public. The famous cartoonist Jurg Spar was invited to create the museum. Later he became manager of the museum and held this post flesh until 1995.

The museum represents two buildings: the older one, in the Gothic style, and, behind it, a new one. You can get to the museum through the old building, which houses the library, office and part of the exhibition halls. The remaining three rooms are in the new part of the museum. The total area is not more than 400 square meters, half of them are occupied by exhibition pavilions.
