House of the Dukes of Brabant

The House of the Dukes of Brabant is located on the most beautiful square in Brussels - the Grand Place . This five-story building in the Flemish tradition was built under the direction of the architect Guillaume de Brienne between 1697 and 1698. The uniqueness of this structure is that behind one facade there are as many as 7 houses hidden, and none of the Brabant dukes has ever lived here.

From the history of the house

In former times, these houses had their names and wore numbers from 13 to 19: the house under the number 13 was called the House of Glory, 14 - the House of Hermitage, 15 - the House of Fortune, 16 - the House of the Windmill, 17 - the House of the Tin Pot, 18 - and 19 - the House of Stockwriters. Houses 14, 15, 16 and 19 were originally municipal, but after the bombardment of Brussels in 1695 were sold to the relevant exchanges in order to receive funds for the restoration of the Town Hall .

The House of the Dukes of Brabat in Belgium received its name thanks to 19 busts of representatives of the duchy decorating the pilasters of the building. Later in the interior and exterior of the house were changed: in 1770 the house received railing and vases on the roof, in the period from 1881 to 1890 vases with the light hand of the architect Victor Jama became gilded.
