How to keep dahlias until spring in the apartment?

Lush dahlia bushes decorate our suburban areas with beautiful flowers from spring and to frost. And I want them every summer to please the eye with bright colors of various colors. And for this, the roots of plants should be stored correctly during the winter. This task is doubly relevant if the dahlia tubers are stored not in a summer cottage cellar, but in a regular apartment. Let's find out how to keep the dahlias until the spring in the apartment.

How to store dahlias in the apartment in winter?

Flower growers have developed several possible ways of storing tubers of these plants. However, with any of them, it should be remembered that you can not store excessively moist tubers, because they can start to rot. But too overdried roots will be stored incorrectly, and in the spring they will not germinate well.

If the tubers are damaged, then these places should be sprinkled with chopped charcoal. You can powder the roots with chalk or ash. Some dip the tubers into a clay chatterbox or mortar of slaked lime. After this, the roots of dahlias should be dried well and only after that they should be stored.

Optimum conditions for storage of tubers - humidity about 70%, temperature + 3-5 ° C and sufficient ventilation. However, it is impossible to create such conditions in an apartment. Therefore, in an apartment, dahlias are kept in this way: they are placed in a box, which is placed in the coldest place in the room, for example, near the balcony door.

Alternatively, you can store the roots of dahlias in the apartment, defining them in a conventional plastic bag with any insulating material. And if you want to store the tubers in a warm dry place, you can do it in tightly tied bags with dry peat. If the room is warm but damp, the tubers are first covered with molten paraffin and, having packed in a package, pour them with moss-sphagnum or dry peat.

Another good option is how to store the dahlias before planting in the spring: wrap them in newspapers, put the tubers in a package, which, in turn, is put in a cardboard box. It should be covered with a film and put the whole building in a cool place (on a heated loggia, balcony, stairwell).

As practice shows, keeping dahlias is quite possible in the refrigerator, provided that the amount of this planting material is small.

In winter it is recommended to check the status of tubers several times.
