This relatively small park, with an area of ​​26 hectares, is located in the southeast of the business district of the city. His name he received in memory of the prominent public and political figure Charles Fitzroy.

Main Attractions

Among the most famous historical attractions located in the park, you can name the house of the famous English navigator - Captain James Cook . Traveling along the Pacific Ocean, he was the first to discover the east coast of Australia. The house was built by the parents of the traveler James and Grace Cook. In 1933, the landlady decided to sell it, and the Australian government purchased it for £ 800.

Transported in disassembled form, literally by bricks. For what were used 253 boxes and 40 barrels. The atmosphere of the English style of Cooks was recreated in the best possible way. Already in 1934 the house of James Cook was assembled and opened for tourists in Fitzroy Gardens.

Another interesting place for visitors is the original model of the real English village of Tudor. The author of this project was the Englishman Edgar Wilson. In the park, the village was due to the humanitarian assistance that Melbourne provided to England during the war.

The architecture of the park

Since its inception, Fitzroy Gardens has undergone some changes. According to the plan of the architect - the architect Clement Hodgkinson - originally the park was a thickly overgrown forest of blue eucalyptus, elm and acacia. Among these thickets there were numerous paths for tourists. Subsequently, the forest was paved, decorative flowerbeds, lawns, free glades for picnics were made.

On one of them is the famous Fey Tree, which is a dried eucalyptus, adorned with many fairy-tale characters.
