Princess Theater

Princess Theater is one of the attractions of Melbourne , a very beautiful theater built by entrepreneur Thomas Moore in 1854 as an amphitheater for equestrian competitions. It was then called Amphitheater Estley - in honor of the Amphitheater Estley, located in London near the Westminster Bridge. In the amphitheater there was also a small playground for theatrical performances.

In 1857, the amphitheater was rebuilt, the facade restored and enlarged, and the building began to be used as an opera house. In 1885, the building was partially demolished, and in its place a new building in the style of the Second Empire grew. Today, not only opera performances, but also musicals, including such world-famous ones as "Cats", "Mamma Mia", "Les Miserables", "The Phantom of the Opera" are in the theater.

Features of the theater

The architectural feature of the Princess Theater is a retractable roof. Her theater acquired in 1886, after perestroika. At the same time, a massive marble staircase appeared in the foyer, and the scene gained electric lighting.

But the main feature of the theater is the presence of ... his own ghost. It is believed that the ghost of Federici is the soul of tenor Frederick Baker, who acted under the pseudonym Frederic Frederich and died from a massive heart attack during the execution of Mephistopheles in March 1888. When premieres are held in the theater, Frederic always leave room in the 3rd row of the mezzanine. Many theater staff and some visitors claim to have seen a ghostly figure in an evening suit.
