Church of St. John the Theologian in Kaneo

Macedonia is famous not only for its picturesque landscapes, but also for its unforgettable architecture. It is worth noting that in this state there are a large number of ancient churches, familiarization with which should start with the church of St. John the Theologian in Caneo, located on the south-west side of the hill. This medieval abode is located in the spiritual center of the Republic of Macedonia, Ohrid . It can not be overlooked: the ancient building stands on a rocky cliff and has been for many centuries rising above the Ohrid lake .

Macedonian architecture of the late Byzantine period

The temple was erected around the middle of the 15th century. Its main architectural difference from other churches is the laconic elegance of the composition and light silhouette.

The dome of the temple is decorated with stepped window niches, triangular zakomars and a jagged brick frieze. Attention of tourists attracts lateral naves, inferior in height to the central. It is thanks to them that an unusual play of planes is created. According to experts, this building is a mixture of two styles, Byzantine and Armenian. Despite its many years of existence, the temple of Jovan Caneo, as it is called Macedonians, retained its original beauty.

What to see in the church of St. John the Evangelist?

Unlike other religious sites in Macedonia, in particular, Ohrid , there are no shrines and relics, which are worshiped by millions of believers from around the world. But on the walls of the temple you can see a detailed picture of the prophets, the angels and Jesus Christ Himself. One of them is decorated with a portrait of John the Theologian, and above the altar the stage "Communion of the Apostles" flaunts.

On the dome of the church there is a fresco "Christ Pantocrator", created in the 14th century. In addition, they admire with their splendor the decorative elements on the facade. In the evening, the scenery of the church is emphasized by the illumination, and from this the building looks even more majestic.

Above from the Byzantine church, on the shore, stands the ancient theater and the no less ancient church of St. Panteleimon in the territory of Plaosnik .
