Ohrid lake

The lake in Ohrid (Lake Ohrid) is located on the border of Albania and Macedonia . Its origin is quite interesting, it was formed in the Pliocene epoch 5 million years ago. There are very few such lakes all over the world, among them there are Baikal and Tanganyika, the rest there are not more than 100 thousand years. The lake is also surprising with its characteristics, it is the deepest in the Balkans - 288 m, and its average depth - 155 m. In particular, due to this, it has preserved a unique ecosystem.

Ohrid Lake is included in the list of objects that are included in the UNESCO world heritage. Its area is no less impressive - 358 sq.km., length - 30 km, and width - 15. No wonder the Ohrid Lake in Macedonia is considered the pearl of the Balkans - even looking at the map, it looks impressive: located at an altitude of 693 km above sea level and surrounded by mountains with a height of more than 2 km, this place is ideal for photo and video shooting.

Lake fauna

Lake Ohrid is rich in aquatic life. In its waters live crustaceans, predatory fish, mollusks, blackheads and much more. Places with a more diverse fauna are difficult to find. Rest on Lake Ohrid

Boats, boats and even cruise ships regularly cruise here, which are incredibly picturesque against the backdrop of mighty mountains. Also there are beaches for swimming, they are well equipped and very clean. But only the water in the lake is cool enough, in May it is not higher than 16 ° С. In summer the water is warmer than in other seasons - from 18 to 24 ° C. But it is also necessary to take into account the weather, since the air is cool.

How to get there?

Ohrid Lake is near the old center of Ohrid , so getting there by public transport or car will be extremely problematic, because there is virtually no room for cars. Narrow streets and lack of full parking are not located to receive guests on the car, so it's better to get to the lake on foot. By the way, there is an amazing museum on the lake, which is also recommended for visiting.
