Art Gallery of New South Wales

The gallery is located next to Hyde Park Sydney - in the park Domain. The date of opening is the end of the XIX century (1897).

History of creation

It took Sydney authorities 25 years to make a decision about creating an art gallery. The meeting of public figures took place in 1871. It was decided that the city and country need a place where fine arts will be promoted through master classes, cognitive lectures and exhibitions. They became the Art Academy, which dealt with the task until 1879. The main field of its activities were various exhibitions.

In 1880, the Academy was dissolved, and in its place the Art Gallery of New South Wales was established. 1882 was a tragic year for the gallery collection. The fire that happened here destroyed it almost completely. For the next 13 years, public men have been deciding whether a permanent building is needed for the Art Gallery.

The architect of the new architectural complex was Vernon. The building he erected is stylized as neoclassicism. It took the first visitors in 1897. In 1988, it underwent reconstruction and was significantly expanded.
