Wat Visun

A small country Laos is famous for its rich culture, which is based on the most beautiful temples. One of the most ancient religious constructions of the country is Wat Visun (Wat Visunulat).

What is interesting about the temple?

The temple complex was founded in 1513 by the order of King Tiao Visulunata. The building is located in the southern part of Luang Prabang near Phu Si hill . One of the main relics of the temple complex is the Buddha sculpture. This figure is made entirely of wood and is 6.1 m high. Another significant relic of the temple is the Lotus Stupa (Tat Pathum), whose history began before the construction of Wat Visun (in 1503).

In 1887, Wat Visun was destroyed by a group of military rebels led by a Chinese commander. Most of the relics were stolen or destroyed during this invasion. Already in 1895 the first restoration works were carried out, and in 1932 - one more. Now the temple of Wat Wisun is a representative of the typical early architecture of Laos with wooden windows and the use of stucco molding. Its distinctive feature is the roof in the European style, which arose under the influence of French architects, helping in the restoration of the temple.

How to get there and when to visit?

The temple complex is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00, the entrance fee is approximately $ 1. Wat Visun is located near the city center, you can reach it by taxi, as a part of sightseeing groups or by car at coordinates 19.887258, 102.138439.
