Valgus deformation of the foot

Flat valgus deformation of the feet is a pathology of the foot position when its height is underestimated and the axis is curved. The heel and toes on the leg are turned outward, which creates an x-shaped shape. This disease can be acquired or congenital, it is difficult to treat, but fortunately, you can get rid of it.

Symptoms of valgus deformity

Symptoms of this disease are manifested by pain and cosmetic defect, the so-called valgus deformity of the thumb of the foot, when it is turned inwards, and the joint grows considerably sidewise, which causes inconvenience in the selection of shoes. In addition to valgus deformity of the first toe, chronic bursitis and flat feet (transverse or combined) are observed, and deforming arthrosis of metatarsophalangeal joints.

The causes of valgus deformation of the foot

Unfortunately, today doctors do not know the exact cause of this disease. They call several reasons, which to a greater or lesser extent affect the development of valgus deformation:

  1. First of all, the development of pathology is promoted by flat feet, so at the first signs of this disease you need to try to cure it.
  2. Then an important role is played by genetics: so, if close relatives have such a problem, then one should pay special attention to the health of the feet.
  3. Endocrine disorders are another reason why valgus deformation of the foot may occur, as hormonal imbalance affects the quality of bone and connective tissue.
  4. And one more reason, which puts the risk of developing this disease - incorrectly picked up shoes. High heels, narrow socks, tight pads load the forefoot, which causes it to deform and arthrosis of the formulations.

Deformation occurs due to the fact that the connective and bone tissue in this area are weak and can not withstand the load, therefore the main preventive measures are aimed at strengthening them.

Treatment of valgus deformation of foot

If the disease is still at the initial stage, then the deformity can be corrected with the help of orthopedic devices: insteps, insoles, interdigital ridges, screeds, finger correctors, etc. This method of adjustment requires a long time - from six months to several years. Together with this it is desirable to organize a diet rich in protein and calcium, so that tissues and bones are strengthened.

Massage with valgus deformation of the foot is also quite effective, as well as a bath with warm water. These methods help strengthen connective tissue and allow the disease not to become complicated. They also reduce the pain syndrome and relieve inflammation, however, if the deformity is strongly pronounced, they will not correct the situation.

As a drug therapy, non-steroid drugs are prescribed to relieve inflammation and in some cases corticosteroids to prevent swelling and other complications.

With valgus deformation of the foot with pronounced curvature, surgery is indicated. Today, there are a lot of operational techniques that successfully eliminate the defect. To remove the build-up on the bag of the joint, make a small incision in the area of the thumb and remove it with a surgical chisel. Sometimes for the surgical treatment of flat valgus deformity of the feet, correction of the finger bone is required.

Rehabilitation after the operation takes at least 6 months, and at this time it is necessary to exert minimal stress on the thumb of the foot, because of which patients are sometimes recommended to wear shoes with a wooden sole or bandage. Along with this, the prognosis after operative treatment is favorable: the working capacity of the foot is fully restored.
