The Royal Opera of Wallonia


The Royal Opera of Wallonia is the largest opera house in Belgium , located in the city ​​of Liege . The architect who designed the opera house was Auguste Ducher. Construction began in 1818, and the first stone of the future Royal Theater was laid by a well-known actress named Mars. The solemn opening ceremony of the main city sights took place in 1820. Twenty-two years later, a monument to the composer Andre Gretry, who was born in Liege, was opened in front of the main entrance to the opera house. A new wave in the life of the Opera House

1854 was marked by another change for the Royal Opera of Wallonia: the building began to be considered the property of the city and underwent significant reconstruction. The modernization of the opera house was headed by the architect Julien-Etienne Remon, whose project envisaged a significant increase in the theater's area and the number of places, electricity, a change in the decoration of the hall, and the equipping of balconies with seating.

The First World War led the building of the theater to desolation, the German invaders used it as a barracks and a stable, but in 1919 the Royal Opera revived and again began to give performances. In 1967, the Royal Opera of Wallonia began to work in the theater building.

The next restoration work in the building of the Royal Opera of Wallonia began in 2009 and presented the theater with a new auditorium, accommodating 1041 spectators, an updated facade, modern sound equipment. While the main building was under repair, the main stage was the "Palace of the Opera", located in a tent camp near the Royal Opera. The pompous opening ceremony took place on September 19, 2012 from the premiere of the play "Stradella".
