If you are interested in the underwater world or are fond of creating mock-ups of ships, Monaco will pleasantly surprise you, because there is the Maritime Museum - a place where you can find a unique collection of everything related to the life of the sea.
Collection Features
The Maritime Museum in Fontvieille gathered under its roof a rich collection of objects that are relevant to the sea. Here you will get acquainted with the models of the famous ships, many of which were transferred to the museum from the private collection of the thirteenth Prince of Monaco Rainier III. In total, the collection of the museum has about 200 mock-ups. Huge transatlantic liners, powerful military and scientific vessels, marine laboratories can all be considered in the smallest detail. And, as a rule, visitors to the museum are greatly impressed by the naturalism of the exhibits.
History of the creation of the Maritime Museum in Monaco
Not only the exhibition of the Maritime Museum is interesting, but also the history of its creation. A huge contribution to the creation of this museum was invested by the dentist Pallanza. This man loved the sea with all his heart and was devoted to him. He worked as a dental surgeon on the ship "Jeanne d'Arc." Profession allowed him to devote time to his favorite hobby - creating magnificent models of ships. During his service on the ship, he designed more than one and a half hundred models.
In 1990, the models of Pallanza's work were solemnly handed over to the administration of Monaco. Actually, it was this event that led to the birth of the idea of creating a specialized museum. The realization of this idea was taken by Prince Ragne III. He took a room under the museum with an area of 600 square meters. It also housed a collection of models of Pallats. Well, a little later, the exhibits from the prince's personal collection were added to it.
The love of modern inhabitants to ships and the sea is not accidental. Shipbuilding has always played an important role in the life of Monaco and more than once served for the good of France, protecting the country from the attack of enemies.
