A bit of history

The Rosary was built by the Prince of Monaco Rainier III in memory of his wife - Princess Grace, who in 1982 died tragically in a car accident. The fact that he chose his choice on the rosary, and not on any other garden and park complex, is no coincidence.

Prior to her marriage, Kelly Grace was a Hollywood actress and at that time was known for her love of colors, especially roses. In her clothes, shoes, accessories, floral motifs always prevailed. In the rider, the mandatory item was the presence of flowers in the hotel room. The actress surrounded herself with them, where only it was possible: at official meetings, photo sessions, press conferences, banquets. At the same time she had an excellent taste and earned the title of "style icon".

Incidentally or not, the designer of her wedding dress was Helen Rose, and Kelly's veil was adorned with beautiful white roses. She was the founder of the Club of Gardeners of Monaco, published her book "My Book of Flowers", annually held charitable Bala Roses, which got their name due to the obligatory decor of 25,000 live roses. Princess Grace also had a subtle taste and talent for making amazingly beautiful compositions and panels from dried flowers and field plants. They were highly appreciated by connoisseurs of art at international exhibitions and were sold for millions of francs, which supplemented the budget of the Grace Charitable Foundation.

What is a rosary?

The Princess's memory garden was opened in 1984. At what an interesting fact is that roses for him were not bought. The largest selection nurseries were sent the best varieties of roses as a gift when it became known that the opening of the Rose Garden of Princess Grace is planned. Similar gifts came from Denmark, Germany, Belgium, USA, Holland, France, New Zealand and England.

The entrance to the rose garden is decorated with evergreen curly and flowering bougainvillea bushes. At the entrance to the right is the sculpture of Princess Grace, surrounded by her favorite roses.

As a whole, for today in a garden it is presented more than 300 grades and kinds of roses, grows more than 8000 well-groomed bushes. If you look at the rose garden from above, it resembles a rosebud, where the petals are lawns with bushes planted on them, and they are separated from each other by winding paths. Only nine such "petals". The rosary from time to time is replenished with new varieties of roses, which breeders often give names in honor of members of the princely family. But the main thing is the rose Princesse de Monaco (Princess of Monaco).

A beautiful background for flowering roses is created by olive trees and sheared yew. The park is also supplemented with neat benches and vertical gazebos and pedestals with curly roses. Roses bloom alternately year-round, but the best season for visiting the rosary is the period from mid-May to the end of summer - this is the peak of their flowering.

How to get there?

The kingdom of roses is in the area of ​​Fontvieille, which can be reached by bus number 5. You can get into the rose garden through a tunnel laid in a rock. The garden is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Free admission. Not far from the rosary, you can also visit another interesting landmark of Monaco - the Stadium "Louis II" .
