Skopje Fortress


The fortress of Skopje or, as it is also called, Kale - the main archaeological monument of the Republic of Macedonia and one of its most important fortresses . The ancient complex of defensive structures was erected during the reign of the Byzantines, in the distant 1st century AD, and the peak of its glory fell on the reign of the Bulgarians in the 11th millennium. During the modern archaeological excavations, a sacrificial pit and a coin of the times of Alexander the Great were found on the territory of the structure.

Even if you are not interested in history, you should visit the Skopje Fortress, at least for the sake of the picturesque panorama of the city, because located in the heart of the capital, on a hill near Vardar. In summer all the activity of the city is carried here: concerts, parties and other entertainment events are held exclusively in the territory of the fortress of Skopje.

A bit of history

The signs of the human settlement on the hill in the Vardar valley date back to the 6th century BC. During the reign of Emperor Flavius ​​Justinian, the first structures were built on the territory of the future fortress. History has many secrets, and the fortress of Skopje is one of them, since scientists can only guess what happened to the fortress for 10 centuries. In the 13th century, Serbs came to power, and Skopje became an important strategic center. The hill in the valley of Vardar is built up. On its territory there are several churches, at the foot of the fortress is the Jewish Quarter.

In 2011, several Albanians living in Macedonia, destroyed the construction of the museum in the form of a church in the territory of the fortress of Calais. This caused interethnic clashes in the country, and also led to a temporary suspension of the construction of the museum.

Features of architecture

The powerful walls of the fortress, made of stone, dilute the twelve towers. On the outer sides of the walls there is a significant number of convenient steps and strokes, thanks to which the traveler, who is hungry for knowledge, will be able to explore the entire structure. A comfortable park inside the fortress will provide the guest with everything necessary: ​​here there are benches, and lanterns, and green trees, and paved paths.

How to get to the fortress of Skopje?

The area of ​​Macedonia and the Skopje Fortress are only 15 minutes' walk away. Boldly walking along the street Orsa Nikolova, you will soon find the object you need. The fortress is on the right bank of Vardara, between the streets of Samoilov and Lazar Litochenski.
