Preparing for winter

As is known, young planting of thuja requires special and thorough care before the onset of frost. Adult plants almost always hibernate well, but the fragile root system of young animals requires careful preparation. In this article, we will try to find answers to the question of how to save it in the winter.

Cooking tuja for winter

The preparation begins in the fall. But we will pay special attention to plants planted the first year:

  1. To slow the growth around the end of August, we stop all nitrogen fertilizing. Approximately with the beginning of autumn, we begin to conduct sanitary pruning, not too strong.
  2. The next step in preparing for winter is to feed in autumn special preparations for the root system. This is the most common "Kornevin", which will help the roots adapt to the cold and survive the frosts.
  3. Preparing the Tui for winter in early November implies the shelter of the basal circle. To do this, fallen leaves from the garden, which mix a bit with the ground, will come in handy. This method will not allow the roots to freeze, will retain moisture and in the future receive additional fertilizing.
  4. The time when it is necessary to shelter thui for the winter, it is difficult to name unequivocally. It all depends on the region: the warmer, the later begin to cover. Usually the period when it is necessary to shelter thui for the winter is at the end of November or early December. However, we will cover only the young. A bag of non-woven material, in which the crown will be compressed enough, is an ideal solution. Sometimes use a skeleton for the crown. Thus, we will combine the preparation of the Tui for winter with measures to preserve the shape of the crown.
  5. Even if the preparation of the tuja for the winter was correct, we do not forget to constantly remove the snow from the top of the crown, in order to prevent the plant from becoming tumbled and deformed. Preparation of low thuja for winter can be carried out by the method of forming the frame over the crown and stretching nonwoven fabric onto it.
