Pregnancy after abortion

Abortion, as a complex surgical intervention, no doubt leaves an imprint on the reproductive health of women. Many experts consider the subsequent pregnancy immediately after the abortion to be unacceptable. And the point here is not even in physiological characteristics, since pregnancy after abortion is possible in principle, but in complications that are inevitable after an artificial interruption.

Why can not I get pregnant after an abortion?

Conception after the abortion is possible. As a rule, as early as the third week, the probability of pregnancy after abortion in patients undergoing surgery is the same as in healthy women. Another thing is that the outcome of such an early pregnancy can be disappointing.

There are several ways of aborting a pregnancy: vacuum, medical and instrumental abortion. The most dangerous is the latter method.

Instrumental abortion is performed before 12 weeks of pregnancy, but the most optimal period is 6-7 weeks. The essence of the procedure consists in scraping the walls of the uterus and removing the fetal egg. It is worth noting that such an abortion is a complicated gynecological operation, which is under anesthesia, and the patient herself needs further observation.

As a result of surgery on the walls of the uterus, scars remain, which completely heal only six months after the operation. That's why pregnancy is not desirable one month after abortion. If the fetal egg is attached to the damaged tissues, the embryo will not get enough nutrition, which means it will not be able to fully develop.

Another reason why pregnancy is not recommended after the first or subsequent abortion is a hormonal imbalance. In the course of pregnancy the woman's organism is reconstructed, and at the moment of a sharp interruption a hormonal failure occurs. It is unlikely that you will conceive immediately after the abortion, but in a few weeks the chances are increasing, while maintaining the pregnancy and its successful ending are under big question. That is why the absolute majority of specialists recommend postponing with subsequent conception until the hormonal background is completely restored.

The cause, which does not affect the probability of becoming pregnant after an abortion, but significantly increases the risk of miscarriage, is a cervical injury. During instrumental abortion, a special expander is inserted into the uterine cavity, which can damage the muscle tissue. As a result, early pregnancy ends at the stage when the cervix can no longer cope with the pressure of the fetal egg - usually at 18-20 weeks.

Prepare and plan pregnancy after abortion

Specialists recommend planning a pregnancy after an abortion no earlier than six months - this is the time it takes to restore the body. To prevent unwanted conception, oral contraceptives can be taken. If a pregnancy test after an abortion showed a positive result, you urgently need to contact your doctor who can assess the risk and prevent possible complications.

Modern medicine does not stand still. Today you can get pregnant as after the first abortion, then after two or even 5. Of course, abortion is not always the choice of a woman, because there are a number of medical indications for which termination of pregnancy is necessary. But remember that any surgical intervention, even carried out at the highest level, does not pass without a trace, which means that your chances of getting pregnant in the future are rapidly falling.
