Mount Le Puus

Port Louis is surrounded by a mountain range of Moca, on which two peaks stand out. By the standards of Mauritius, they are quite high. The height of Mount Le Pus is 812 meters, while Peter-Bot is slightly higher, 821 meters. Both were formed more than ten million years ago due to the volcanic eruption.

Mountain climbing

Mount Le Pus, like a raised thumb, is located in the north-western part of the island. On its top there is an observation deck, from which one can see the whole ridge of neighboring hills. From there you can also see the city, the seven-step waterfalls Tamarin and the lagoon. On the right is the peak Peter-Bot.

There is a legend on the island that says that Charles Darwin was the first person to climb Mount Pus. It is quite picturesque and the rise to it is less complicated than the neighboring one. Therefore, every year a large number of tourists still climb, although it should be noted that not all get to the top. But this is not necessary, because even a few hours of walking along the mountain paths will inspire, and guides will take you to those places that are most beautiful. Most often, the ascent begins from the village of Petit Verger, and you can finish it at a height that exceeds the sea level by several hundred meters.

Preparing for a trip

To travel was comfortable, it should be prepared. Be sure to grab a windbreaker in case of rain, preferably with a hood. And the shoes should be comfortable to move around. Since you have to walk on the mountains for several hours, be sure to put a bottle of water in the backpack. Do not interfere with sunscreen to avoid sunburn.

How to get there?

From Port Louis to Mount Le Pus can be reached by bus, but it is better to take a taxi. In any case, you need to get to the village of La Laura, located at the very foot. Near the village is the rental of equipment needed to climb to the top. For the first climb it is better to hire a guide, it will cost you € 55.00. Excursions to the mountain usually begin at the Moka Museum at about nine in the morning. By 12.30 they end.

In addition to the bus and taxi, you can get to Le Puus in a rented car. In this case, it is better to use the service from a well-known company. But remember that in Mauritius, left-hand traffic, and cyclists and pedestrians do not really like to follow the rules of the road. In the resort town of Gran Bae there is also a rental of motorcycles.

Having reached the Moca mountains, you will need to turn left on the circular traffic with a large flower bed in the direction of the mountain of Ori. In the village of La Laura, the road makes a sharp turn to the right, and after twenty-five meters you will see a country road on your left. You will have to move through the thickets of reeds, but turning left at the fork, you will see that the path narrows. Go along the mountainside and in a couple of kilometers you will be at the crossroads. To get to the observation deck, you need to turn right, to the path that goes along the trees. Just keep in mind that before the top the climb becomes steeper. But in order to see all the beauty, it's worth trying.
