Mostar - attractions

The city of Mostar is considered to be the unofficial historical center of Herzegovina . The city has a great history and many memorable places and cultural heritage, which even Sarajevo could envy. In addition, Mostar has natural attractions, photographs of which adorn the pages of magazines and books on Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Natural attractions

The main natural landmark of Mostar, which is visible from any point of the community - is Mount Hum . The height of the mountain can not be called grandiose, by world standards it is not so much - 1280 meters. At the same time, it attracts attention of tens of thousands of tourists. Hum Mountain does not have dangerous rocks, high peaks or tops covered with snow, so even beginners can climb the mountain.

But the mountain has become incredibly popular not because of its natural characteristics. Hum serves as a pedestal for the symbol of the Catholic faith in Mostar - a white cross 33 meters high. It was erected in 2000 and since then, tourists, like the locals are arguing about justice. After all, almost half of Mostar's people profess Islam.

At some point, the construction of the cross caused disputes between believers, but tolerance, which was brought up here for centuries, has gone up today, there are no big disputes between Catholics and Muslims. Many tourists do not visit this place because of their faith, but to see a huge cross nearby. By the way, it is visible from any area of Mostar.

The second natural attraction to which you should pay attention is the Radobolia River . It is a tributary of the Neretva and in a hot period is a dirty trickle. But in the cooler period of the year, when heavy rains are passing, Radobolia seems to come to life again and turn into a noisy stream of water. In addition to the fact that during this period the river has a rather picturesque view, it also has a direct relation to amazing sights. For example, in the Middle Ages the river set in motion several mills, some of which have survived to this day. Another attraction is the Krivoy Bridge . It has an unusual, bent shape, so its name is completely justified. This bridge is remarkable for the fact that it is from it that the most beautiful view of the river opens. Therefore, there are always a lot of tourists with cameras here.

No less interesting sight is the artificial lake Yablanitsa . It was created in 1953 and is located in the suburbs of Mostar. The pond was located in a beautiful place, among the mountains. There are always a lot of people here - somebody comes to fish, somebody swim or take a boat ride. This place is saturated with serenity and freedom. The width of the lake is about three kilometers, so there is enough space for everyone.

Mostar - old town

The main sights of Mostar are related to the historical heritage of Bosnia, but more accurately the word "ancient" comes up to them. The status of the historic center of Herzegovina is fully justified, and first of all it should be said about urban bridges. By the way, the city itself was named in honor of the bridge, thrown across the Neretva. It was built by the Turks in the 16th century and named Mostar. The city around the bridge was built exclusively for his protection. At the same time, the infrastructure in the city of the same name developed quite rapidly, thanks to which we can now see ancient buildings.

The old bridge is 28 meters long and 20 high. For those times it can be considered a major project. And if you take into account the fact that the bridge combines the architecture of different styles, it becomes just a unique sight. The bridge was firmly established for four centuries, but the Bosnian war could not survive. In 1993, militants completely destroyed it. In 2005, the Old Bridge was completely restored. It is believed that the modern version is just an exact copy. But in order to reconstruct it, all its components were raised from the bottom of the river.

The second bridge in Mostar that deserves attention is the Krivoy Bridge . It connects the banks of the small river of Radolf and is considered a symbol of the city. Unfortunately, there are no sources about the date of the bridge construction and the architect, but this only underlines its antiquity. Despite the name of the bridge, its arch has an ideally correct shape and a height of 8.56 meters. From both banks of the bridge you can climb the stone steps. It has a beautiful view of the river. Only in the warm season the river dries up and the spectacle opens not very inspiring, it turns into a shallow swamp.

As it is not strange, the Krivoy Bridge was also reconstructed. It was destroyed by a flood in December 2000. The initiative of the restoration of the bridge was initiated by UNESCO. In 2001, the bridge was rebuilt and today it is a symbol of the city.

Hotel in a historic building

Ancient houses belonging to noble families always attracted the attention of tourists. The old building in combination with the merits of their owners can not leave indifferent. The hotel "Bosnian National Monument Muslibegovic" is a "family nest" by Muslibegovic. The age of the building is more than three centuries. Part of the building is a museum, where you can see not only household items, but also samples of Ottoman calligraphy, old textiles, furniture and other items from the 17th century. The apartments in the hotel have a traditional design and modern facilities. The hotel building is a historical heritage of Bosnia, therefore it can be safely considered one of the main attractions of Mostar.

Other attractions

The bridge is the basis of the tourist destination in Bosnia, besides the main world-famous attractions, it also has a lot of interesting places that can be a real discovery for you. For example, the Karagez-Beck mosque erected in 1557 or mansions erected during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. It is equally interesting to look at the synagogue of 1889 erected next to the Jewish memorial cemetery. But not all ancient buildings were perfectly preserved to this day. So, from the early Christian basilica there were only ruins on which memorable tablets are placed. The ruined ancient buildings include the Ottoman public bath . This landmark is especially interesting for tourists, since in history it is rarely told about the daily life of our ancestors, and the bath affects this part of their life.

How to deal with Mostar?

Mostar is located in the south-eastern part of Bosnia , through which the main transport routes of the country pass, so it is not difficult to get to it. In the direction of the city, buses often run and regular train services are sent.
