The Milyac River

The Milyacka River flows through the capital of Bosnia - Sarajevo . It starts south of the metropolitan suburb of Pale, swiftly carries its waters, twisting between the hills on which the city stands, and flows into the Bosna river. The river is relatively small: its length is only 36 km, but due to its location it is known and popular among tourists.

Historical reference

The Milyatka River in its widest place does not exceed 10 m, so more than 15 bridges have been built in Sarajevo, among which there are pedestrian wooden and massive transport. Many of them went down in history.

  1. At the crossroads near the Latin bridge in 1914, the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed, which was the reason for the outbreak of the First World War. At the time of the united Yugoslavia, the bridge was called the Principles - by the name of the assassin of the Archduke. In 1993 he was returned to his former name.
  2. Outwardly, the unremarkable bridge Vrbanja has several names at once, and each of them is connected with tragic pages in the life of Sarajevo. "Bridge of Suada and Olga" - the name in memory of Suad Dilberovich and Olga Susic, who died from bullets of Serbian soldiers on the bridge on April 5, 1992 and are considered the first official victims of the siege of Sarajevo. The second, the popular name - "The Bridge of Romeo and Juliet." In 1993, the whole world flew around the history of the Bosnian Serb Bosko Brkich and the Bosniaks Admira Ismich, who tried to move from the besieged Muslim part of the city to the Serbian part, but were treacherously killed on this bridge. This couple became a symbol of the suffering of all people who, not of their own accord, became participants in the Bosnian interethnic conflict.
  3. One of the Sarajevo bridges was designed by the architect Gustav Eiffel - the author of the famous Eiffel Tower. Of modern constructions, the bridge in the form of a loop, designed by local students and having the symbolic name "Rush slowly", is of interest. On it you can relax and sit on a bench, admiring the river and the embankment.

Walking along the banks of Mylacki in the old part of the city is not only informative, but also interesting. All architectural styles are represented, especially the buildings of the times of Austria-Hungary. On the embankment there are many cozy restaurants waiting for guests. In the evening, the Milyacki Embankment is beautifully illuminated.

Why is the Milyacka River in Bosnia brown?

Attention is drawn to the brownish-reddish shade of water in the river and the specific smell of its waters. This color is due to the presence in the water of a large number of certain minerals that change the color of water. There is another, more prosaic reason - insufficient efficiency of treatment facilities, this problem has been successfully solved in recent years. Fishermen on the banks of Mylacki - a rare sight, because the river is small and fast, with a mass of rapids in the city, and the fish does not get accustomed to it.
