Markale market


In the old part of Sarajevo , among the houses with traditional red tiles is the market of Marcala. This is a traditional market, where local traders offer the necessary and not very things. This place is ideal for buying souvenirs or unusual goods.

But Markale market is primarily not known for its goods or colorful shops, but the tragic events that occurred twenty years ago. In memory of them, a memorial plaque is installed on the market.

What can I buy?

When you come to the market of Marcale you do not have to puzzle over what to please your family and friends. Local traders, offer a lot of interesting things. First of all, you will notice trivial souvenirs - statuettes and magnets. But they can not leave you indifferent, since they are often devoted to the most important events in the history of Sarajevo. It's not always something fun and cheerful. Therefore, the sight of some of the figurines may surprise you.

Women probably will be interested in counters with jewelry made of precious metals or stones, handmade bags, hats, leather goods and clothing. As souvenirs you can choose pillows in the form of a cylinder in the traditional style, fabrics, handmade rugs, scarves or decorative items from local craftsmen.

In the market there is a cafe where you can drink a cup of aromatic coffee with traditional pastries and enjoy the atmosphere, because the stone pavements and houses neighboring the market for at least 300 years.

Memorial plaque

In the early nineties Sarajevo embraced civil war, which was merciless to the population. In February 1994, a 120-mm mortar shell exploded in the market. This was the first tragedy that took the lives of 68 Bosnians, after a year and a half, several mines were dropped into the bazaar, which killed 37 people.

Since then, the Markale market is known as one of the most tragic places in the city. In memory of the sad events on the market a memorial plaque is installed, on which every year fresh flowers are laid. It reminds people of the grief that disagreements bring and how much blood they have seen in these places.
