Latin Bridge

The Latin bridge in Sarajevo is the place where the tragic event happened, which became the reason for the First World War, which took the lives of millions of people. It was here in June 1914 that an attempt was made on Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a result of the assassination, Ferdinand was killed, which was the reason for unleashing a war that developed into the First World War.

The attempt was made by Gavril Princip. For a long time not far from the bridge, exactly where the killer was, there was a symbolic little pedestal. On it were the footprints of the supposedly the same Gavrila. Also earlier near the bridge was a monument to Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophia. However, today there is no pedestal, as well as a monument, but a tragic incident is reminiscent of a small plate located on one of the nearby buildings.

History of construction

Originally, the Latin bridge, thrown across the Milyatskaya River , was built of wood - this is confirmed by documentary records dating from 1541. However, the wooden structure did not last long. So it was decided to build a more solid bridge.

Funded the construction of the stone crossing through Milyacka Ali Aini-beg and Alia Turalich - in 1565 a new bridge was stretched over the river. He served a little longer, although he could not stand the too active river. Thus, the massive flood of 1791 caused significant damage, which eventually required major restoration works.

Why the Latin Bridge?

The Latin Bridge, Bosnia and Herzegovina is named "in honor" of the part of the city in which the Catholics of Sarajevo lived. They were called here "Latins", and the abode of adherents of Catholicism was called Latluku.

However, originally officially the bridge was called, as Frenkluk chupriya, that is the Frenkluk bridge. After all, the official name of the area of Catholics was Frenkluk.

The new government, which began to rule in these lands in 1918, gave the bridge a new name - in honor of the murderer Franz Ferdinand. Until 1992, he called the Principles Bridge. By the way, it was in 1918 that the monument to Ferdinand and Sofia was destroyed.

Only in 1992 the bridge again received its historical name and now it is called Latin.

Architectural style

A distinctive feature of the structure, which gives it uniqueness, are holes in the supports, making the bridge particularly attractive. Although, according to some experts, most likely they were made in order to reduce the overall weight of the structure.

By the way, in its appearance it reminds a little of one more bridge in Sarajevo - this is Sheher-czechin. Both structures have three main bearing supports and four arches.

The construction of the embankment mentioned above and the closing of the fifth arch led to the fact that the bridge lost its symmetry, but it is still attractive and externally very beautiful.

For the construction of load-bearing structures that are directly in contact with water, limestone was used, and all other parts are made of tuff.

The Museum of the Latin Bridge

The tragic events of 1914 became a kind of turning point in world history. It is difficult to imagine how the world would develop, without an attempt on the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, whatever the kind of modern Europe.

Considering this, a museum of the Latin Bridge was created in Sarajevo, which details the history of this place.

Also in the expositions are many artifacts, one way or another connected with bridges, and archaeological finds, seized as a result of the reconstruction of the bridge and excavations carried out near the structure.

Where is and how to get there?

Find in the Sarajevo Latin Bridge - not a problem, because it is actually in the heart of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

But in Sarajevo, Russians are not that easy to get into. This is due to the fact that there is no direct air service with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Will have to fly with transfers, for example, in Istanbul, Vienna or other cities, depending on the chosen route.

By the way, in Sarajevo fly charter flights, but only in the holiday season. And take a place in the plane is not so simple, except that you bought a ticket in advance from a travel agency.
