Mohokar River

The Mohokare River is one of the most important rivers for the kingdom of Lesotho , as it flows through the entire state. Thanks to the waters of this river, the lands of the Basuto people are distinguished by their fertility, they are easy to cultivate and they do not need additional irrigation. A remarkable river is that it is on its banks that the natural boundary between the states of Lesotho and South Africa passes.

Geography

The origins of the Mohokare River are in the Drakensberg Mountains at an altitude of about 2,100 m above sea level. The beginning of the river falls almost to the extreme northern point of the state of Lesotho, from where it further descends along the south-western border of the kingdom from South Africa to the region of Mabots. Here the river completely passes to the territory of the South African Republic, where it subsequently merges with the waters of another river - Orange . It is noteworthy that in South Africa the Mohokare River has another name - Caledon. The total duration of the river is 480 km, 200 km of which falls on the territory of the Kingdom of Lesotho.

What to see?

The Mohokare River is the main source of freshwater for the capital of the kingdom of Lesotho Maseru . One of the notable places on the river is the border bridge across it in the Maseru region, along which the two states are delineated. The bridge was built only in 1905 and it still functions. The bridge also includes part of the railway line on the road between Lesotho and the Republic of South Africa.
