History of the fortress

The date of foundation of the city of Medun is considered to be the III century. BC, this is evidenced by the first mention of it in the writings of Titus Livius. However, scientists unanimously agreed that the age of the present ruins is much older. Previously, Medun was called Meteon, and it is possible that his appearance and outlines were quite different. The fortress was built on the very top of the mountain in order to better defensive function first from the Romans and the Macedonians, and later from the Turks. It was her main destination, which remained unchanged. Until the XIX century. the city of Medun inhabited the people. Since that time, several houses and the burial place of the famous commander and writer of Montenegro - Marco Milyanov - have been preserved.

Uniqueness of the structure

The architectural features and appearance of the city-fortress was influenced by the fact that different stages of its existence were inhabited by different tribes. The walls of the building reflect Roman, Turkish and even medieval traditions.

Tourists can get acquainted with the most ancient buildings that have remained untouched. These are ladders paved in the rock by the Illyrians and leading to the acropolis, the pristine walls of the Medun fortress city, built of rough-hewn stones, two moats near the walls and a cemetery. Scientists did not agree on the appointment of these ditches. However, historians suggest that they could serve for rites and rituals, in which very often the Illyrians used snakes.
