The palatine tonsils have grooves called lacunas. One type of tonsillitis, which occurs with the defeat of glands, is lacunar angina. It is characterized by a sharp inflammatory process with the release of mucous exudate with impurities of pus. In the absence of timely therapy, the disease becomes chronic.
Causes of lacunar angina
This disease is usually caused by an infection. Tonsils perform protective functions in the body, preventing the penetration of pathogenic microorganisms into the respiratory tract. With weakened immunity, the tonsils can not cope with this task, and infection occurs.
It should be noted that in adults, pathology often acquires a chronic form and recurs in the autumn. Also the causes of inflammation can be:
- supercooling;
- unfavorable ecological situation;
- infections of the oral cavity and nasopharynx;
- parodontosis;
- caries.
Infection usually occurs by inhalation of air, through food and household contacts with a sick person.
Symptoms of lacunar angina
Clinical signs of the disease do not appear immediately after infection, but after 10-12 hours. Sometimes the incubation period of lacunar angina is 2-3 days.
Characteristic symptoms:
- chills;
- headache;
- a strong reddening of palatine tonsils, their puffiness;
- discomfort when swallowing saliva, drinks and food, cutting pain and burning;
- increase in temperature up to 40 degrees;
- yellowish or dirty white copious plaque on the surface and in the cavity of the lacunae;
- pain in the muscles, usually the calves, in the lower back;
- enlargement of lymph nodes (cervical);
- an increase in the heart rate to 90-120 beats per minute;
- a syndrome of an intoxication of an organism;
- pallor of the nasolabial triangle with simultaneous hyperemia of the cheeks.
Sometimes lacunar angina occurs without a temperature or with a slight increase in it (up to 37-37.3 degrees). Also, this indicator can fluctuate within a day in the range of 2.5-3 degrees.
Complications of lacunar angina
With further progression of pathology, the infection penetrates deep into the respiratory tract, which is fraught with pneumonia. Also, the described type of the disease can go into another form - fibrinous angina, which is complicated by damage to the brain tissue. Among the systemic consequences are:
- pyelonephritis;
- myocarditis ;
- rheumatism.
How to treat lacunar angina?
First of all, you should observe bed rest and a special diet:
- abundant warm drink;
- consumption of food rich in protein and vitamins;
- liquid food (all dishes are in a frayed form).
To combat pathogenic microorganisms in the treatment of lacunar angina, antibiotics are prescribed. The most effective drugs are penicillin series, in particular - Augmentin. It can be combined with Amoxicillin and Clavulalate to ensure complete bacterial eradication.
Also, otolaryngologists use the following varieties of antibiotics:
macrolides of a wide spectrum of action, for example, Azithromycin; - cephalosporins (Zinnat, Aksetin, Supraks);
- fluoroquinolones (moxifloxacin).
Determine what medications will be most effective, you can with the analysis of a smear from the oral cavity. In addition to these drugs, symptomatic therapy is used - antipyretic and anti-inflammatory drugs (Nimesil, Ibuprofen), antiseptic solutions for gargling, antihistamines (Loratadin, Suprastin). In addition, washing of the lacunae of the tonsils with a solution of furacilin or chlorophyllipt is shown.
