Can I dilute Ceftriaxone with Novocaine?
The injections of Ceftriaxone are quite painful, therefore it is recommended to dilute the drug with an anesthetic solution. According to recent studies, it is undesirable to grow this antibiotic Novokain. This is because the activity of Ceftriaxone in the presence of Novocaine is reduced, and the latter increases the risk of anaphylactic shock . Optimum replacement for Novocaine in this case is considered to be lidocaine, which is less allergenic and better eliminates pain.
Dilution of ceftriaxone with lidocaine
For intramuscular injections, the antibiotic is diluted with an anesthetic solution of lidocaine (1%) thus:
- 250 mg of ceftriaxone in 2 ml of lidocaine (0.25 g of the prepared solution);
- 500 mg - in 2 ml (0.5 g of the prepared solution);
- 1000 mg - in 4 ml (1 g solution).
If a 2% solution of lidocaine is used, it is also necessary to use water for injections and to dilute the drug according to the following procedure:
- 250 mg of ceftriaxone in 1 ml of lidocaine and 1 ml of water (0.25 g of the prepared solution);
- 500 mg - in 1 ml of lidocaine and 1 ml of water (0.5 g of the prepared solution);
- 1000 mg in 1.8 ml of lidocaine and 1.8 ml of water (1 g of solution).
After adding the solvent to the vial with the preparation, shake it thoroughly until the powder is completely dissolved. You need to inject the medicine deep into the gluteus muscle (upper outer quadrant), slowly and gradually.
It should be remembered that lidocaine is never injected into a vein. A freshly prepared solution of Ceftriaxone with an anesthetic can be stored for no more than six hours at room temperature, with longer storage, it loses its properties.
