Reframing is a metaphorical method of "putting a picture in a new frame", developed by Richard Bendler and John Grinder. Any problem, situation or crisis is based on a positive resource, reframing helps to rethink and see what is happening in a new context.

What is reframing?

Reframing is a set of techniques in modern positive psychology, NLP , which means the reorganization or rethinking of perception, behavior, thinking and, as a result, getting rid of destructive (anxious, neurotic, dependent) behavior. The reframing method is widely used in business technologies, helping to bring the organization to a new level of development.

Types of reframing

Person's reframing is carried out with the help of speech strategies, the influence of the word and getting into the card of a person's values ​​changes his perception of his qualities, the negative situation that has developed. There are two types of reframing:

  1. The wording and scoring of the problem, as it is seen. As an example, you can take an unwanted habit or behavior and designate it with a letter, number or color.
  2. Establishment of contact with a part of the person (unconscious) responsible for the habit. You can ask: "I want to communicate with the part of myself that is responsible for the habit." It is important to determine the significators of communication, what it will be, the answers "yes" and "no" or sensations in the body.
  3. Determination of positive intent. Here it asks whether this part will help to find out what it wants to achieve for itself positive through unwanted behavior or habit . If the answer is "yes," you can continue to ask questions: "If you had other equally effective ways to realize the intention, would you like to try them? If the answer is no, it's important to ask yourself: "Do I believe that my subconscious mind has a positive intention, even if it does not want to tell me now?"
  4. Appeal to the creative part. In addition to the part that created unwanted behavior, there is creative. It is important to ask the first, controlling behavior to communicate the positive intent of the creative. When the answer is "yes", a person turns to the creative part with a request to create at least 3 new useful forms of behavior and report this to managing undesirable behavior.
  5. Arrangement of an agreement. Ask your unit for controlling behavior, whether it wants to take advantage of one of the new forms. The answer is "yes" - the unconscious has taken an alternative, if "no", you can say this part that it can use the old way, but first let it try new ones.
  6. Check for environmental friendliness. Ask the unconscious if there are other parts that are against or want to join the new forms of behavior. Silent means consent.

Reframing exercises

The exercises below can be done both in the group and independently. Reframing - practical exercises:

  1. "Another epithet." Exercise in a group of 3 - 4 people. On a sheet of paper written at least 20 qualities (adventurer, dissolute, arrogant, greedy, monster). The aim of the group is to find the opposite in terms of reframing to each quality, for example: glutton - a gourmet, loving to eat delicious, knowledgeable in food.
  2. "I'm too ...". Exercise is useful for independent analysis. On the piece of paper you need to write out at least 10 of your qualities, which seem to be flawed, for example: "I'm too ... lazy / trusting / sensitive / irritable." Write a new one with a positive aspect opposite each statement (put the qualities in another frame). Analyze what has changed in perception.

Positive reframing is designed for the fact that a person who was previously in despondency, a sense of lack of prospects changes the point of view and begins to understand that everything that happens to him makes sense.
