In the north-western part of Montenegro is the amazing National Park Durmitor (Durmitor).
general information
It was founded in 1952 and has an area of 290 square meters. km. It includes the homonymous mountain massif, part of the Komarnitsa plateau and the canyon. In 1980 Durmitor was included in the list of the World Organization of UNESCO as an environmental object of the world biosphere. The plateau of the National Park consists of limestone and is located at an altitude of 1500 m. On this mountain mass there is a large number of picturesque peaks, of which 48 overcame the mark in 2000 m. The highest point of Durmitor is Mount Bobotov-Kuk (2523 m).
What is located in the park?
Here are presented 8 unique ecosystems, distinguished by their unique beauty and pure saturated air:
- fir-spruce forest - is located near the Mlin creek;
- pine forest - located in Crna Poda;
- Susice is the valley of the canyon;
- Zabojsky reservoir;
- Lake Barno;
- Skryka water body;
- a canyon formed by the Drago, Susice and Tara rivers. It is considered to be the largest in Europe and takes 2nd place in the world. Its length is 80 km, and the depth is 1300 m;
- Black Lake - the most famous in Durmitor, its height is 1416 m, and the area - 516 sq. Km. m. The pond is very beautiful, has a natural blue-green tint and has excellent transparency with visibility up to 9 m.
In total in the mountains of the Durmitor reserve there are 18 crystal clear glacial reservoirs, which are called "Mountain eyes". Each lake has its own legend and has a special atmosphere. In the park there is a large number of springs (748 pieces). The most famous of them is famous for its medicinal properties, it can be seen on Mount Savin-Kuk .
Many mountain peaks have glacial caves. The deepest is the Shkrk (800 m), and the famous - Ice Cave , located near the mountain Oblast head at an altitude of 2040 m. It consists of stalactites and stalagmites, and its length is 100 m. It can be reached by bike or on foot.
What else is famous for the National Park?
On the territory of Durmitor there are 1325 various plants, of which 122 are endemic, 150 are medicinal, and more than 40 species of mushrooms are edible. There are 160 different birds in the park, as well as fish and a lot of mammals. In the reserve there are also cultural and historical sights related to different cultures and epochs. In the settlement of Plelevia there is an Orthodox monastery of the Holy Trinity, the Hussein-Pasha Mosque and the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement. In the town of Nikovichi there are necropolises of ancient Italians, and in the village of Scepan Pole there are remains of the Sokol citadel, founded in the XIV century, the Church of John the Baptist and other architectural monuments. It is also worth visiting the Djurdjevic Bridge across the Tara.
What to do in the reserve?
For tourists in Durmitor are issued a map with many routes, which is easier to navigate on the spot. Travelers are offered a lot of entertainment: boat rides, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, climbing, paragliding, and in winter - skiing and snowboarding in Zabljak .
If you want to spend a few days in the national park , you can stop at the campsite (5 euros per day). Throughout Durmitor there are cafes and restaurants where Montenegrin dishes are prepared, as well as souvenir shops and tour desk. The guide service per day is 20 euros.
How to get there?
From Podgorica , buses run through the various localities (Zhablyak and Nikshich ) to the National Park, the distance is about 100 km. Also here you can reach by car or taxi. The services of the guarded parking will cost 2 euros per day.
