Canyon of the river Piva

Montenegro has a bright and picturesque nature, which is the pride of the local population and attracts the attention of tens of thousands of tourists. One of the most beautiful natural attractions of the country is the canyon of the Piva River (Piva Canyon).

Description of the valley

The gorge is located on the territory of the municipality of Plouzhine and is located on the Pivets Plateau. The latter consists of a mountain massif, whose peaks are called Pivska Planina, Maglich, Voluyak and Bioche.

The Beer River originates near the Golia massif and flows through the western regions of Montenegro, and then crosses the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina . The length of the reservoir is 120 km, and the power capacity is used in the work of the hydroelectric power station.

The canyon of the Piva River has a maximum depth of 1200 m, its total length is 34 km, and the catchment area is 1270 sq. Km. km.

The banks of the gorge are connected by strong bridges, along which a passenger car can pass. The color of the water here is emerald green and at the same time it is distinguished by its amazing purity and transparency: it can be drunk without fear of poisoning.

In 1975, the valley near Scepan Polya was blocked by the dam of Mratinje. As a result, there was a reservoir, called the Pivsky Lake . This is the second largest reservoir in Montenegro. The dam turns the tranquil riverbed into a bubbling stream.

What can I do?

Around the gorge there are rocks covered with lush vegetation (here there are oak and coniferous forests), on which wild chamois are grazed and golden eagles nest. All this creates a sense of pristine nature and fills the space around the canyon with some mystery, beckoning travelers from all over the world. Here tourists and locals like to come for:

  1. Active and passive recreation is an ideal place for walking, swimming in the water, mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hunting, fishing, etc.
  2. Even on the coast you can rent a boat and make an exciting trip. Be careful, because the water level here changes dramatically and suddenly.
  3. Along the coast of the Pig canyon there are small settlements, where you can not only stay overnight , but also taste local homemade products. This area is also famous for herbs that grow here.

Features of visit

Come to the gorge better in the warm season, in winter the road is slippery and impassable. If you want to admire the canyon of the river Piva from a bird's eye view, then keep in mind that for travelers in the mountain, many tunnels through which one can climb up are cut through.

However, they are not illuminated, and on all the way the streamer is quite poorly covered and it is very difficult to disperse to oncoming cars. It is better to go here with an experienced driver. The road will be difficult, but the views opening from the top are simply breathtaking and worth the effort.

How to get there?

To the canyon of the river Piva excursions are not organized, and buses do not go. It is most convenient to come here by taxi or car on the road E762. The distance from Podgorica is 140 km, and from Budva - 190 km.
