The list of the main rivers of Montenegro

The number of more or less large rivers in Montenegro exceeds a dozen. Of them, in size, they are leading:

  1. Tara. It is the largest river in the country, the tributary of Drina. It flows for 144 km, and the last 40 km cross the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina . The water temperature here rarely rises above + 15 ° C, and its purity is a veritable parable. The river forms the deepest canyon in Europe , the depth of which reaches 1300 m. The last 25 km of the current through the territory of Montenegro is broken by rapids, so this area is popular among the rafting enthusiasts. The Tara River, like its canyon, is protected by UNESCO.
  2. Beer. Its length is 120 km. It originates from the slopes of the Golia massif, namely Mount Sinyatz, and ends on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, merging with Tara. Forms a canyon , the average depth of which is 1200 m. On its slopes along the entire length of the river the beech and coniferous forests grow. With the help of the river's waters, the Piva Lake was artificially created.
  3. Moraca. It is the main waterway that feeds the Skadar Lake . Its length is more than 100 km, and the canyon is no less beautiful than those described above. The river lies in a rocky terrain, it formed a canyon 90 km long, the average depth of which is 1 km. Moracha is considered to be relatively shallow, however, during the melting of snows, especially in high-mountain areas, its waters carry a danger, developing a speed of up to 110 km / h.
  4. Boyana. In itself, this is a fairly small river, which in length reaches only 40 km. It connects Skadar Lake and the Adriatic Sea. But there are two aspects, due to which Boyan should pay attention. First, in some places the riverbed is below sea level. When strong winds blow from the south, the water from the sea gets back to Boyana. This gives the impression that the river flows in both directions. Secondly, at the point of confluence with the sea its course splits, so that the island of Ada Bojana emerged, on which the largest nudist settlement in Europe is located. The delta of the river is in great demand among fishermen. There are even equipped with special fishing lodges on stilts, which are rented out to tourists in a season.
  5. Zeta. The length of the river reads 86 km. It originates near the town of Nikshich , and then follows to the southeast. It is the tributary of the river Moraca. Its feature is the fact that in the vicinity of Slivel it completely disappears, and outside it comes out near the village of Glavzade.
  6. Lim. The largest tributary of Drina, one of the longest rivers in Montenegro. Its length is 220 km. Among tourists is famous for the fact that there is excellent fishing, in connection with which even special fishing tours are organized. The record weight of fish caught in Lima is 41 kg.

Resting in Montenegro, it is not worth all day to lie on the beach . Be sure to set aside a few days for a walk along one of the picturesque rivers, arrange fishing in silence or check out your abilities by rafting along the mountain rapids.
