Canyon of the river Moraca


The Canyon of the River Moraca is one of the most beautiful places in Montenegro , traveling along which you can see high cliffs, streams of the river, changing depending on the season, picturesque beaches with growing flowers and lots of greenery.

Moraca Canyon is located on the territory of two municipalities of Montenegro - Podgorica and Kolasin , in the middle part of the Moraca River and ends with the exit to the plain of another river - the Zeta.

Monastery of Moraca was founded in 1252 by the order of Prince Stefan and bears the name of the Holy Martyr Charalampia. Until now, the cathedral church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin has been perfectly preserved, in which icons and frescoes of the 13th century, made in Byzantine style, are kept. There is in the monastery a small church of St. Nicholas, a holy spring and an apiary.

Traveling along the canyon, you will see the tunnels cut in the rocks, you can walk along the bridges and visit the observation platforms. This is an ideal place for fans of extreme sports. Near the monastery of Moraca is a camping site with tents and lodges where you can relax after a guided tour. The camping is equipped with everything necessary, the prices for accommodation are moderate. For motorists there is a parking.

How to get there?

There are several ways to visit the canyon of the river Moraca. On it, on the one hand, there is a highway that, after restoration, is safe for tourists and allows you to see all the fun on the way. On the highway you can reach the canyon in a rented car or on a regular bus, next to Kolasin.

On the other hand, a single-track railway line from Podgorica to Kolasin is laid high in the mountains, it can also be reached by the canyon.
