Palazzo Publico

In the center of San Marino is a very stylish building in terms of architecture and surrounds its equally beautiful landscapes, not to mention the crowd of people who want to visit this building. One might think that this is a museum or a temple, but the Palazzo Publico in San Marino is the residence of the mayor's office and everyone can appreciate both the political and historical attraction from within.

History of Palazzo Publico

Palazzo Publico in translation means "people's palace" and is a government building and at the same time the town hall of San Marino, where they hold official meetings and make important decisions for the city. The town hall was built in 1894 by the architect of Roman origin Francesco Azzurri. Outside there is a bust of marble depicting Azzurri, but it is not known whether he installed it himself or was later installed in honor of the architect.

What to see?

Outside the building we can observe that the palace is decently decorated with many coats of arms of noble families of the city, other settlements and municipalities, images of saints in the form of triptychs and there is even a bronze statue of Saint Marina (the founder of the Republic of San Marino). The Town Hall has a small tower with a clock on which the bell is located, at one time notifying the city residents of the enemy's attack and calling on men to go and defend their homeland. In place of the Palazzo Publico, the "House of the Great Communes" was located for a long time in the 14th century and this bell from the chapel has been working since that time.

If you wait for your turn among those who want to go to the People's Palace, then inside you will be surrounded by a classic medieval Italian interior, here you can see works of art in the form of paintings, sculptures and busts of important people for the history of this city that made an inordinate contribution to its development or cultural history. The most famous painting in the palace depicts Saint Marin surrounded by his admirers.

The main room in the town hall is the Council Hall, in which from the middle of the 19th century about 60 members of the parliament worked. In the palace there is a small balcony, from which two times a year (on April 1 and October 1) they report who was chosen as the two captains-regents.

Freedom Square

It is the Palazzo Publico on Liberty Square and is not the only interesting place here. While you are in line to the People's Palace, you can admire the local statue of liberty in the center of the square. Before the town hall from the 14th century there is a former post office, but in the 16th century it was reconstructed. Guard detachments and soldiers are replaced every hour (from 9:30 to 17:30), but you can take a look at this action only from May to September.

How to visit the People's Palace?

San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world, therefore tourists prefer to walk on it, especially as the most interesting sights of the capital of the same name are located in the historical center of the city.
