Casemates Bok


The casemates of Bok are connecting tunnels and many kilometers of underground passages in the rock of Le Bock, which is located in the ruins of an old fortress. Casemates of Boc in Luxembourg are full of secrets. They could tell a lot of gloomy stories, witnessed in the distant past. The history of casemates Bok is closely connected with the historical events of the state of that time.

A bit of history

The first underground tunnels were built in 1644 during the reign of Spain. It was at this time that the first bastions were erected above the Petryuss River, and the first few hundred meters of tunnels were laid in the calc-sandy cliffs. After the French came to power, they continued the construction of multi-kilometer tunnels, until the banks of the Petrusse River joined underground passageways.

In 1715, the Austrians, who came to power, also did not leave the strengthening without attention. In the era of their rule, casemates in the Bock rock were added to the casemates over the river, and the fortress was significantly expanded and strengthened.

How to visit?

Underground defensive moves are located at different levels and go deeper than 40 m. It is this landmark of Luxembourg that gave the capital another name - "Northern Gibraltar". In 1867, the London Congress decided to dismantle the city's fortifications. After the liquidation in good condition, only 17 km of underground passages have been preserved, the visit of which has been open to tourists since 1933.

Casemates Bok in Luxembourg are very popular among tourists, they are visited annually by more than 100 thousand people. The entrance to the underground fortifications is not regulated, therefore the tourist can choose whether he wants to purchase an excursion program with a guide or independently to visit the tourist attraction.   1. Casemates Bok are rather stony, so it's better to choose shoes more sporty.
  2. It's worth taking warm clothes with you, since the air temperature in tunnels is lower than on the surface of the earth.
  3. If you go to inspect tunnels without a guide, then you should have some time. Most moves are dead-end, and to go to the next branch of the tunnel, you must return every time.
  4. The corridors in the casemates are rather narrow, which, with a large number of visitors, makes the passage difficult. If you want to wander alone, then you should come to the opening.
  5. On the walls you can find emergency buttons in case of emergencies.
  6. Photo and video shooting in casemates is allowed.

From the airport to the casemates, you can reach the car by coordinates in 7 minutes, if you go to the southwest by Rue de Neudorf / N1 towards N1-C.
