Inflammatory process of an infectious or aseptic nature, proceeding on mucous membranes of one or several sinuses of a nose, is called a sinusitis. Isolate acute sinusitis, the symptoms of which can persist for 2-4 weeks, and chronic sinusitis, lasting more than 12 weeks. The disease can be caused by acute respiratory viral infections, bacterial and fungal infections, curvature of the nasal septum, polyps in the nose, allergies and other factors. Let us consider in more detail what symptoms the acute form of sinusitis in adults has, and what its treatment is.
Symptoms of acute sinusitis
Most often in adults there is acute maxillary sinusitis - the defeat of the maxillary (maxillary) sinuses, rarely mucous tissues of cells of the latticed bone, frontal sinuses, sphenoid sinuses. Regardless of where the pathological process is localized, the manifestations of all kinds of acute sinusitis are similar. The disease is characterized by the following clinical picture:
- pressing, bursting pain in the head, increasing in the evening and with the inclination of the head forward, more felt in the forehead, nose, eyes;
- nasal congestion (both or one nostril), difficulty in nasal breathing;
- discharge from the nose of a different nature;
- elevated body temperature (sometimes above 38 ° C);
- decreased sense of smell;
- increased fatigue;
- sleep disorders.
In acute purulent sinusitis, when the inflammation affects the deep layers of the mucous membrane lining the paranasal sinuses, separated from the nose are purulent in nature, i.e. have the appearance of a viscous yellowish-green or brownish liquid with an unpleasant odor. Sinusitis edematous-catarrhal nature is accompanied by the release of clear mucus.

Treatment of acute sinusitis is carried out after ascertaining its shape, localization, causes. As a rule, to cure a fairly conservative methods using
- vasoconstrictor drugs;
- antibiotics (with sinusitis bacterial etiology);
- local antiseptics;
- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ;
- antihistamines.
Physiotherapeutic methods may also be prescribed. During the treatment it is important to observe the bed rest (in the early days), keep the room at a normal temperature and humidity, drink more warm liquids, eat healthy, easily digestible food.
