Toko Merah


One of the oldest buildings in Jakarta is Toko Merah (Toko Merakh). The building is well preserved until our days, so it is enjoyed by tourists.

Toko Merah was built by the colonialists in 1730 as a residence for the Governor-General named Gustaf Willem (Baron Bath Imhoff), who ruled the Dutch East Indies. For this, the builders have chosen a plot of land with an area of ​​2.71 square meters. m in the western part of the main channel Kali Besar.

Since 1743 there was a naval academy here, which is the oldest in all of Asia. Over time, the Toko Merah building belonged to such rulers as:

In 1786 there was a hotel in the building. In the yard there were erected stables for 16 horses and 8 wagons for guests. Subsequently, additional buildings were converted into row houses. In 1851, the building was purchased by Oey Liauw Kong, who founded the house together with the store here.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the building belonged to the Bank of India. After 1940, the building housed the Dutch company Jacobson van den Berg. Currently, there are Indonesian offices here, which belong to the conglomerate of state-owned enterprises in the field of trade.

Description of Toko Merah

The building is located in the historical center of the capital of Indonesia . The facade of the building is made in scarlet color, so locals often call it the Red Shop.

The architectural style of the sights refers to the early period of colonial architecture. Toko Merah is a two-story building with a gable roof and fairly high leaf windows.
