One of the most unusual, but at the same time touching sights of Iceland is the "Imagine the World" Tower, created in memory of John Lennon, a cult character of the 20th century.
The author of the memorable composition is the wife of John Yoko Ono. The tower is not just a memorable sign, the whole composition is filled with a special meaning and is a message to the world. Which is already in the very title "Imagine the world." By the way, this reminds her of Lennon's famous musical composition "Imagine", in which he sang about a fairytale, ideal world without poverty, hunger, etc.
Features of the Tower
The Tower of Peace, Iceland was built exactly a year. It was laid in 2006 on October 9. The date was chosen not by accident - it was on this day that John appeared. They opened the building exactly one year later - again on the anniversary of Lennon's birthday.
The composition of the Tower, created by Yoko Ono, is a kind of "Lighthouse of the World" - a well of desires, from the center of which several streams of light stream the sky a few times a year creating an unreal, but visible to the human eye tower.
To create a "tower" six lights are used. They feed on geothermal energy, and the height of the streams of light reaches four kilometers! Throughout the structure, the phrase "Imagine the world" is written in 24 languages.
Working hours of searchlights
The rays light up 5 times a year:
- they shine two months in a row from the birth of Lennon (October 9) and the day of the death of the legendary musician (December 8);
- from December 21 to December 28 - the winter solstice;
- in the New Year's holiday;
- the day of the birth of Yoko Ono - on February 18;
- for seven days from 21 to 28 March (the vernal equinox).
Naturally, the lanterns light up only in the dark and shine exactly until 00:00. And only three times a year they shine all night - in the New Year, in the birthdays of Lennon and Ono.

Grand opening
The opening was attended by many outstanding people, including Lennon's associates, members of their families. Paul McCartney could not come.
By the way, speaking at the opening, Yoko Ono explained why Iceland was chosen for the construction of the tower: "The World Tower should stand in a unique ecologically clean place. Every time I visit this place, it makes me feel 10 years younger. " According to her, the construction of such a tower is the dream of John, who first spoke about it in 1966.
