The structure is a golden pagoda, consisting of 3 floors. It was built by King Bhaskar Verma in the 12th century (although some sources point to the 15th century). This historic temple of Vihara impresses with its decoration and architectural splendor.

The monastic complex is located in a couple of steps from the famous Royal Square of Patan, while it is hidden from the noisy streets and crowds of people by narrow aisles and narrow alleys. The shrine is considered one of the most visited among tourists and the most revered among the locals. It is a religious center for all pilgrims from the Kathmandu valley .

Description of the shrine

The facade of the building is decorated with elaborate decorative patterns, and on the top floor of the shrine there is an image of Buddha, cast from gold. On the honorable pedestal is a prayer wheel, which is huge.

In the Golden Temple you can see:

The main priest in the shrine is a boy of 12 years old. He serves only 30 days, and then hands over his responsibilities to the next child.

Features of visit

Every year from July 23 to August 22 in the Golden Temple passes Shravan. At this time, thousands of believers flock here every day. Hindu and Buddhist traditions are closely interwoven here, which are observed not only in religion but also in everyday life.

When going to visit the shrine, remember the main rules. For example, you can not go here with leather goods. Near the main entrance to the Golden Temple there is a special room in which visitors can leave such things. This prohibition is caused by the fact that the cow in the country is a divine animal. It is best to come here early in the morning (04:00 - 05:00) to see how the monks meditate, look at the service without a crowd of tourists and find peace of mind. You can make a photo in the Golden Temple, but you need to turn off the flash. And in no case can you turn your back on the Buddha.

Anyone can visit the Golden Temple. This fact symbolizes a benevolent attitude to different religions and serves as a good example of harmony between communities in the country. Enter the institution only barefoot, with covered elbows and knees.
