The main thing when installing a greenhouse is to build it in such a way that all plants receive a maximum of sunlight. This can be achieved with the help of a competent selection of the width and height of the beds, as well as their location. As for the latter, ideally it should be west-east, so that the sun illuminates your beds throughout the day. But not everyone can afford to place a greenhouse in this way. Therefore, if it is impossible to choose the optimal location, it is better to arrange the beds so that they are illuminated at least in the first half of the day. Otherwise, sprouts, chilled for the night, will not warm up in the morning, and the hot day sun will burn them.
To equip the beds, the choice of a suitable design will also help. Thus, in a narrow and long greenhouse, it is best to place two lateral ridges with a passage in the middle. The width of beds in this case should be such that it is convenient to look after plants while standing in the aisle. The standard width is 95 cm at a length of 2 m.
You should pay attention to the width of the passage itself - it will depend on whether you are going to use the garden wheelbarrow and other bulky tools. In any case, it is better to make the passage as wide as possible (at least 60 cm), so that in the future it would be comfortable to work.
In a wider room of the greenhouse, the device of three beds, the central one of which is wide, will be optimal, since it can be approached from both sides. In this case, its width should in no case exceed 1.5 m. Passages (and there will be, respectively, two) can be made the same (60-70 cm) or sacrifice the width of one of them in favor of a wider bed. On a wide passage it will be possible to transport a wheelbarrow, and on a narrow passage it is easy to walk without using such large-sized garden tools.
Modern trends in agriculture suggest that plants are yielding more crops in narrow beds. This is due to better lighting and ventilation of crops. Try to equip instead of standard ridges narrow (for 45 cm), and you will see that two of them will yield a larger harvest than three conventional ones, which has already been tested by many gardeners - amateurs and professionals.
The height of beds in the greenhouse is another reason for disputes other than width. The standard is considered to be a height of 20 cm, but often the bed is raised to 80 cm in order to warm the soil in the spring as quickly as possible.
Very popular today are the so-called high beds, placed in wooden boxes. This layout is an invention of a Canadian doctor named Mitlajder . Similar beds (they, incidentally, are located from north to south) have a width of 45 cm and a height of 40 cm. The passageway is very wide - 90 cm. During almost 50 years of experiments, Myllajder concluded that it is this arrangement of beds in the greenhouse gives an excellent effect and significantly raises the yield of garden crops.
It should be noted that the layout of beds in the greenhouse is best done before it is erected. This will allow the best planning and orientation of ridges, and their dimensions. Usually this is done when building a greenhouse for growing a particular type of vegetables.
