Preparation of irises for winter - trim time

Perennial irises are able to please their flowers in the garden from year to year. The spectrum of their colors is extremely diverse. They are white, yellow, blue, blue, pink, red, purple, brown.

Many gardeners wonder: do irises cut for the winter? This refers to the necessary rules for the care of flowers.

When to clip the irises in autumn

Carrying out the cutting of irises in autumn prevents the ripening of seeds, which restrains the flowering of plants. It also helps to prevent self-sowing of flowers in the garden. Pruning begins after the flowering of the irises (in the beginning of autumn).

It is recommended that attention be paid to the following points:

  1. Remove dried flowers along with the seed. This will prevent the growth of pods with seeds. For removal use sharp clean scissors or pinch flowers with your fingers. In this case, the peduncles are cut off at the very base.
  2. Trim the stems of irises after the flowering is complete. This helps to avoid rotting stems. Removal is carried out with a sharp instrument (for example, garden shears ). Pruning is performed at a level of 2.5 cm above the rhizome of the plant.
  3. Cut down the foliage of plants. Leaves on irises are left until they themselves fade. This is very important, because with their help the flower transfers energy to its roots, which will help them to survive the winter easier. Therefore, cut not green, and already wilted leaves at a distance of about 15 cm from the ground, they are shaped like a cone. As a rule, the leaves are pruned in early October.

After cutting the irises for the winter, they should be covered with lapnik, dry peat, leaves, straw. The material for warming is placed about 15 cm high.

Observance of these rules will help prepare flowers for the winter period.
