Paro Airport

Paro Airport is the largest in Bhutan (and the only one having international status). It is located 6 km from the city , is located at an altitude of 2237 meters above sea level. Let's talk more about it.

general information

Paro Airport began operating in 1983. It is included in the TOP-10 of the most complex airports in the world: firstly, the surrounding terrain has a very complex terrain, and the narrow valley in which it is located is surrounded by sharp peaks of peaks up to 5.5 thousand meters high, and secondly - strong enough winds, because of which take-offs and landings are carried out in most cases exclusively in a southerly direction. So, for example, the Airbus A319 has to make a turn at an altitude of 200 m, and take off with a "candle".

However, despite such difficulties, the airport accepts even relatively large aircraft of the BBJ / AACJ class; However, the necessary condition is the presence on board (including on board business jets) of the navigator, who will be engaged in laying the route. In 2009, only 8 pilots in the world had a certificate allowing them to board the Paro airport.

The airport operates only during the daytime due to the lack of lighting equipment that allows safe takeoff / landing in the dark. Despite all these restrictions, the demand for flights to Paro every year is increasing: if in 2002 it was used by about 37 thousand people, in 2012 - more than 181 000. The airport is the base of the national air carrier of Bhutan - the company Druk Air. Since 2010, the permission to fly to Paro was received by Nepalese airline Buddha Air. Today, flights depart to Delhi, Bangkok, Dhaka, Bagdogru, Calcutta, Kathmandu, Guy.

The services

Paro Airport has a runway 1964 meters long, which, as already noted above, allows it to take large enough aircraft. Passenger terminal of the airport is built and decorated in national style. In addition to it, there is a cargo terminal and aircraft hangars. In the passenger terminal there are 4 registration racks, which at the moment is quite sufficient for passenger service.

It is only possible to get to the city from the airport by taxi, since public transport and car hire for tourists in Bhutan are, unfortunately, not yet available.
