Bern is the capital of Switzerland . According to historians, this city has concentrated in itself so many sights and monuments of history and architecture, how many, perhaps, not in one of the cities of Europe. One of the main attractions of Switzerland are the Bernese fountains , which adorn the historical part of the city. Initially, they were erected to provide residents of the capital with drinking water. One of the fountains is devoted to our article.

The famous Bernese fountain

The Moses Fountain is one of the eleven working fountains of Bern. It is located on the town square of Münsterplatz and is considered one of the oldest fountains of the Swiss capital. The Moses Fountain was built during the Renaissance, in the first half of the 16th century. The attraction is represented by the sculpture of a prophet holding in his left hand a book with ten main commandments. The right hand of Moses is directed to the first commandment, which reads: "Du sollst dir kein Bildnis noch irgedein Gleichnis machen", which in German means: "Do not make yourself an idol." The head of the saint is framed by the radiance of the divine rays of light.

Few people know the interesting history of the fountain. It turns out that he was erected twice. The first was opened in 1544. He benefited and adorned Berne until 1740. The vagaries of nature and two centuries did not spare the construction, the fountain was destroyed. Half a century later, in 1790 the second fountain of Moses began, which pleases locals and numerous tourists to this day. By the way, the water in the fountain is quite suitable for drinking.

There are no exact data on the architects of the fountain, but scientists suggest that the pool and the column were designed by Nikolaus Shprjungli. The figure of the prophet Moses is the work of Nikolaus Sporrer.
