International Museum Day

It is difficult in our time to overestimate the importance of museums - thanks to the many exhibits we can not only study the history of our and other peoples of the world, art, but also see many things clearly. Collecting and preserving the historical and artistic heritage, museums conduct a huge scientific and educational work and fuel the interest of young people in the study of sciences. This is the reason for us to tell the International Museum Day. It is also considered a professional holiday for all museum workers.

History of the International Museum Day

The history of the International Day of Museums begins in 1977, when the 11th conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), took a decision on the annual celebration, which is celebrated around the world on May 18.

Every year, this day is becoming more popular. After 30 years, in 2007, the International Museum Day was celebrated in 70 countries of the world, among which not only highly developed in the state leaders, but also not the most famous in this area: Singapore, Sri Lanka , Nigeria, Uzbekistan.

Events for the International Day of Museums

Annually this day is accompanied by a lot of cultural events with different themes. For example, the theme of 1997-1998 was "Struggle against the Illegal Transfer of Cultural Property", and the theme of 2005 "The Museum is a bridge between cultures". In 2010, the theme of the Day was the words - "Museums for the sake of social harmony", in 2011 - "Museums and Memory".
