Episcopal Church of Christ

The main religious shrine of the Panamanian city of Colon is the Episcopal Church of Christ, which was built in the middle of the XIX century. It is the first in the history of Panama by the Anglican Church.

Renwick's famous work

The main architect of the project was the American engineer James Renwick, in addition, the construction was overseen by one of the largest railway companies in the country. In 1863, the rector of the church became the Reverend Father Kerry - a graduate of the London Theological Seminary. Working on the construction of the church, the British warmly greeted Father Kerry, despite the fact that he was black.

History of the shrine

The Episcopal Church of Christ was illuminated on June 15, 1865, a solemn event was led by Bishop Alonzo Potter of Pennsylvania. After 2 years, Panama was in the epicenter of the anti-Colombian uprising, as a result of which the city of Colon was completely destroyed and burnt. Fortunately, the cathedral of Christ and the buildings around it miraculously survived, but at the time became a haven for criminals who did not hesitate to plunder and desecrate the shrine. Only in October 1885 the Episcopal Church of Christ was able to return to ordinary religious life, as the government authorities managed to suppress the mutiny.

New Life of the Cathedral

For many years the cathedral remained unchanged, but in the beginning of the 21st century the Kolon municipality organized large-scale restoration works that ended on August 23, 2014. Since then, believers not only from the Colon, but also from the remotest corners of Panama, have reached one of the oldest churches in the country .
