History of the Epiphany Cathedral

The history of the Elohov cathedral has its roots since 1469, when the holy fool Basil the Blessed was born in the village of Yelokh. The village itself received its name from the word "alder". Olochovets flowed along the territory of Elokh. There is it today, but it flows through the pipe. At the end of the XV century, a small temple of wood was built in Yelokh with the participation of the holy fool Basil the Blessed. The information about him was not enough. Historians know that at the beginning of the 18th century a stone church appeared on the place of the wooden church, to which seven years later the refectory was completed with a couple of now existing chapels and a bell tower.

In 1837, the stone church was almost dismantled, but already in 1845, according to the project of the architect E. Tyurin, a five-dome cathedral was erected in its place. His consecration in 1853 was carried out by Metropolitan Filaret Drozdov of Moscow and Kolomna. In those days Elohovo temple was considered a Moscow parish, but the townspeople allocated it to a separate cathedral because of the grandeur and beauty of architectural forms. In 1889 the architect P. Zykov built the refectory of the Elohov Cathedral, and the architect I. Kuznetsov restored fragments of painting on the domes.

Since its erection the cathedral has not ceased its work. And this is despite the fact that more than once the Soviet government decided to close it. For the first time the temple managed to "win back" officials, and the second closure was prevented by the Great Patriotic War that had begun.

The status of the cathedral was given to the church in 1938, and from 1945 to 1991 he was Patriarchal. In 1991, the Epiphany Cathedral was returned to the Assumption Cathedral in the Kremlin.
