We all love cucumbers in pickles and fresh. And if pickled cucumbers can be enjoyed both in winter and summer, fresh are available only in the warm season. But in winter, there is the opportunity to provide yourself with fresh vegetables, because a small garden can be arranged directly on the windowsill of the apartment or on a heated balcony.
What kind of cucumbers can be grown on a windowsill?
In winter, not all varieties of cucumbers grow on the windowsill, or rather, they can grow, of course, but it's unlikely to bear fruits. The fact is that in natural natural conditions, thanks to insects, natural pollination of male and female plants occurs, thanks to which the ovary appears.
But the breeders brought out special hybrids of self-pollinated varieties of cucumbers for the window sill. They are called parthenocarpic hybrid, that is, these female individuals do not require pollination for the appearance of the ovary. Some varieties are still worth pollinating. To do this, take a male flower (hollow) and with the help of a brush or even without it, pollinate female flowers.
To grow in winter cucumbers on the windowsill are the best varieties that are guaranteed to bear fruit. Consider them in order:
- The hamlet . Since this is a bee-dusted variety, an apartment gardener will have to manually take care of pollination of female flowers. But the result is worth it, because it is a super-high variety, which gives fruit after 30 days after sowing. Each cucumber has a length of up to 10 cm and black spikes, which are easy to remove during washing.
- Shchedrick . This variety refers to varieties of cucumbers, intended for growing on the windowsill and is characterized by bouquet fruit, that is, cucumbers, up to 12 cm in length grow in clusters of 5-8 pieces.
- Hrustik . Fruits from this plant can be harvested 50 days after sowing. The hybrid is self-pollinated - the plant will only need watering. This variety belongs to vigorous, and on one vine they can collect about 40 pieces of cucumbers, which grow in a bundle of 7 units.
- Catherine . Small cucumbers of dark green color, grow massively on a small bush.
- Pasamonte . Small gherkins, which are well used in salads, as well as for decorating a festive table.
- Zozulya . This bee-dusted variety is also acceptable for window sills. Thanks to their efforts, it is possible to grow real giants up to 25 cm, which will feed even a large family.
