Composting toilet

Increasingly, the owners of summer cottages and country cottages refuse from the usual street toilet in favor of composting. Thanks to a simple waste recycling technology, the comfort of using such a device increases many times.

How does the composting toilet work?

The principle of the device is primitive simple. Instead of water, peat or small wood sawdust is used in it. If the industrial toilet is made of plastic, then its design provides a lever, pressing on which the necessary quantity of sawdust empties into the sewage and completely covers them, which prevents the spread of odor.

If the compost toilet is made by hand, then it is necessary to fill up the waste manually, using a bucket. As a rule, one dose of backfill is enough to absorb 10 liters of sewage. After a while, due to the lack of moisture and the strength of the wind falling into the middle of the tank, fermentation of the waste takes place and they are from harmful, turn into harmless compost.

Is it a septic tank or compost toilet?

The advantages of using a septic tank and composting toilets are different and they are present in both cases. So, a septic tank can be quite impressive, which allows it to be pumped out only once a year, and when using a system of overflows, this equipment is generally autonomous and does not require cleaning.

But for the septic equipment on the site, it will take a lot of money, as it is necessary to remove the top layer of the soil, install the entire system, and then again plan the site. But the compost toilet can be installed in any room and it can also work for a long time without cleaning, depending on the model and the size of the tank.

You can make a dry closet on your own from ordinary boards, or you can buy popular composting toilets of the Finnish company Biolan. They are of several types - with the use of electricity and without, and are divided into separation and conventional.

Types of composting toilets

The simplest model of the compost toilet is with full or partial processing of sewage. They differ only in the volume of the waste storage tank. In case of partial processing, incompletely recycled wastes are stored every 2-3 months for further fermentation into a special compost pit. But devices with full processing are designed for cleaning once a year. During this time the compost has time to mature and can be used as a fertilizer for the garden and the garden.
