Cervical fluid

The secret produced by the cervix is called cervical fluid ("mucus" is used more often). It is produced directly in the cervical canal by cells lining its walls. The main function of such a biological secret is to maintain the viability of spermatozoa that enter the vagina after intercourse. It can be said that this fluid is a kind of "defender" of the male's sex cells, and promotes their further advance into the uterine cavity.

A characteristic feature is the fact that the cervical fluid changes its character by the days of the cycle. This phenomenon is caused by a change in the hormonal background in the female body. Let's take a closer look and try to figure out how the cervical secret changes in this or that period.

How does the discharge from the cervical canal change during the menstrual cycle?

Cervical fluid before the most mild, as a rule, has a watery consistency or does not stand out at all.

After the menstrual flow and changes in the hormonal background, women begin to notice that the nature of the mucus changes: it becomes thicker. This occurs approximately 2-3 days after the end of menstruation. Women themselves characterize the nature of such secretions as creamy. In this case, the volume of the released liquid also increases.

At the very ovulation, the cervical fluid acquires a transparent consistency, and in its appearance it is very similar to raw egg white. The girls themselves at this time note a strong moisturizing in the groin area. Thus, the female body is prepared for possible conception, creating favorable conditions for male sex cells.

After the end of ovulation cervical fluid thickens again. This fact is conditioned, first of all, by a decrease in the concentration of the hormone estrogen in the body of a woman.

What is the nature of cervical discharge when a baby is born?

Cervical fluid during pregnancy should be thick all the time. At the same time, part of it forms a so-called stopper, which is located in the cervical canal. This formation represents a kind of barrier in the pathway of pathogenic microorganisms.

How does cervical mucus change with age?

When passing a gynecological examination during the menopause, women are confronted with the conclusion: fluid in the cervical channel, but do not know what it means.

In view of the age-related changes that affect the reproductive system, women often have a violation after 50 years, such as cervical canal atresia. It is characterized by a decrease in its lumen. In such cases, bougie (expansion) of the channel itself is carried out, which allows to solve the problem.
