Can I have sex on Good Friday?

Good Friday for Orthodox believers is a day of special sorrow, for it was on this day in the history of Christianity that the Savior was crucified. What is allowed to do on Good Friday from the point of view of the church? Last Friday before Easter, it is customary to pray hard and strengthen your faith, you must not indulge in joy and fun, singing and dancing on this day is considered a great sin, you should not pay attention to household chores, wash, clean the house. Concerns for preparing the Easter meal should be left on Saturday.

This day reminds us of the martyrdom of Christ, therefore every believer should spend it in spiritual meditation. Of course, the ban does not apply to your occupation, nobody canceled work. But whether it is possible to have sex on Good Friday or not, is the intimacy between spouses a sin, a question requiring special attention.

Sex on Good Friday - yes or no?

Sex - too intimate thing, and questions, when and under what circumstances they can be dealt with, should be discussed, first of all, between a man and a woman. In this case, it is worth considering the faith of both partners, as far as each of them is close to God and his faith, whether he holds fasts, whether church services visit, etc. If both are deeply religious Orthodox people, it is easy for them to agree among themselves when it is better to refrain from intimacy, such people always understand each other from a half-word.

It's another matter if one of the partners is a person far removed from the church and faith, and refusing to be close to him from the other partner can deeply offend him. If you are a believer, you should at the very beginning of the relationship warn your half about the possible abstinence in sex on certain days. So you will avoid unnecessary grievances and disagreements in the future, and in case of misunderstanding from the partner immediately realize that this is not your person.

In case both man and woman do not adhere to Orthodox traditions, attend church services and do not fast, the question of abstinence in sex for them is not so significant, they just do not think about it.

What does the church say?

Ceremonies unanimously echo that on Good Friday you can not have sex, and if possible - it is better to refrain from intimacy even until Monday. Talking about why you can not have sex on Good Friday from the point of view of Orthodoxy, then the believing person should refrain from intimacy not only on Holy Week, but the whole fast. After all, Jesus calls these days to fight with passions, to which sex belongs.

Perhaps this is a reasonable solution, because fasting implies not only the refusal of fast food and a humble way of life, but also chastity and conjugal abstinence. As the Bible says, "Do not commit adultery." In Russia, even spouses who were married in the church were not allowed to enter into intimacy. And the children conceived in fasting were not allowed to baptize in the church. So maybe you should listen to the Orthodox traditions of our ancestors?

There is another opinion on this matter. Some saints (as, for example, the Apostle Paul and Dionysius of Alexandria) sincerely maintained that the legitimate spouses themselves should determine the degree of abstinence from sex, regardless of the time of fasting. But only by mutual consent!

Now you have an answer to the question: can I have sex on Good Friday. No one has the right to advise two people how best to do, any decision they make is their choice. The church should listen to the opinion, no doubt, but the peace and harmony in the family and between the spouses is no less important, and sex in the passionate week is permissible - if at least one of the partners wants it.
