Bradycardia - treatment

A healthy person has a heart rate of 74-80 strokes per minute. When the heart beats slowly (less than 60 beats per minute), it is called a bradycardia.

In some cases, this frequency is considered the norm - for example, in athletes who get physical exercise every day for several years. In other cases, this symptom indicates a violation in the work of the heart, which requires additional examination and treatment of disease-causes.

Bradycardia - the causes of treatment

There are several forms of bradycardia, on which the causes of the development of pathology depend:

  1. Extracardiacal. Most often it is caused by vegetative disorders, neuroses, narrow clothing (a tight collar exerts pressure on the carotid sinus), as well as increased intracranial pressure. In some cases, it may occur against a background of hypothyroidism.
  2. Organic. Here the causes are organic disorders: myocarditis, myocardial infarction, cardiosclerosis, myocardial dystrophy. In these cases, fibrotic changes occur or poor conductivity develops in the myocardium, which leads to a decrease in the frequency of contractions.
  3. Medicinal. There are medications that promote bradycardia: β-adrenoblockers, quinidine, glycosides, calcium channel blockers, morphine.
  4. Toxic. It arises because of sepsis, hepatitis, typhoid fever, uremia, and the intake of substances that slow the heart beat frequency.
  5. Bradycardia athletes. In some cases, professional athletes because of special vegetative regulation have a very rare pulse - 35 beats per minute.
  6. She's old. It develops due to the natural aging process of muscles and tissues, as well as the slowing of metabolism.

Treatment of bradycardia depends on what it is caused: it can be carried out with the help of medicines, and with the methods of traditional medicine. Bradycardia is recommended to be treated in a combined way, if the cause is clarified.

Medication for bradycardia

The prescription of drugs for the treatment of bradycardia depends on what it is caused by: thus, some of its forms do not require medical treatment if they are not accompanied by clinical manifestations.

If sinus bradycardia is caused by hypothyroidism, the treatment is to normalize the functions of the thyroid gland with the help of hormone therapy.

If the bradycardia is caused by taking certain medications, then it is enough to cancel them, and within a week take sorbents: white coal, liferan or enterosgel.

When vegetative disorders are indicated, the use of medications that tonify the vessels (eg, tonsine).

Toxic bradycardia is eliminated by eliminating the focus of infection with antibacterial or antiviral drugs.

Thus, the treatment of bradycardia is carried out by the cardiologist only in some cases: in general, this is the task of other specialists who are engaged in the treatment of disease-cause.

If the bradycardia is due to a violation of the electrical system of the heart, then the implantation of a pacemaker is shown.
